We Are In GREAT Company!
Note: It is always VaVuk's intention to only list genuine Vegans and Vegetarians, not 'flexitarians' nor 'rumoured' or 'disputed'. Thank you.
Whether you're already a committed Vegan or Vegetarian or you're just starting out, or perhaps you're just reading up because you know it's only a matter of time now until you make the change, it doesn't matter, you need to know this. We aren't the first and we share our beliefs and passion with a very long list of totally cool and mightily impressive people.
Vegans and Vegetarians From History (real wisdom)
BUDDHA (Religious Figure) "One should not kill a living being, nor cause it to be killed, nor should one incite another to kill"
HENRY DAVID THOREAU (American Philosopher and Essayist) "I have no doubt that it is a part of the destiny of the human race, in its gradual improvement, to leave off eating animals"
HENRY SALT (English Campaigner for Social Reform) "As man is truly 'humanised', not by schools of cookery but by schools of thought, he will abandon the barbarous habit of his flesh eating ancestors, and will make the gradual progress towards a purer, simpler, more humane, and therefore more civilised diet system"
ISAAC BASHEVIS SINGER (Polish American Writer) "When a human kills an animal for food, he is neglecting his own hunger for justice. Man preys for mercy, but is unwilling to extend it to others"
LEO TOLSTOY (Russian Author of 'War and Peace' and 'Anna Karenina') "A man can live and be healthy without killing animals for food; therefore, if he eats meat, he participates in taking animal life merely for the sake of his appetite. And to act so is immoral"
LEONARDO DA VINCI (Genius, Inventor, Artist) "The time will come when men such as I will look upon the murder of animals as they now look on the murder of men" and "My body will not become a tomb for other creatures"
MOHANDAS GANDHI (Non-violence Movement Freed India) "I do not regard flesh-food as necessary for us at any stage and under any clime in which it is possible for human beings ordinarily to live. I hold flesh-food to be unsuited to our species. To my mind, the life of a lamb is no less precious than that of a human being. I should be unwilling to take the life of a lamb for the sake of the human body"
RALPH WALDO EMERSON (American Essayist) "You have just dined, and however scrupulously the slaughterhouse is concealed in the graceful distance of miles, there is complicity"
NIKOLA TESLA (Serbian American Inventor of AC Currrent) "It is certainly preferable to raise vegetables, and I think, therefore, that vegetarianism is a commendable departure for the established barbarious habit. Every effort should be made to stop the wanton and cruel slaughter of animals"
PLUTARCH (Greek Historian 46-120 AD) "I rather wonder both by what accident and in what state of soul or mind the first man touched his mouth to gore and brought his lips to the flesh of a dead creature, he who set tables of dead, stale bodies and ventured to call food and nourishment the parts that had a little before bellowed and cried, moved and lived. How could his eyes endure the slaughter when throats were slit and hides flayed and limbs torn from limb? How could his nose endure the stench?"
WILLIAM BLAKE (English 19th writer and poet) "All wholesome food is caught without a net or a trap"

Dalai Lama (Spiritual Leader of Tibetan Buddhism)

JILL ROBINSON (British founder of Animals in Asia Foundation) "I believe that every animal is an individual and every single one has the capacity to feel fear and to suffer. AND "If it's not good enough for your eyes, why is it good enough for your stomach"
COLLEEN PATRICK-GOUDREAU (US Author, Speaker and Cultural Commentator) "When we turn away from the reality of what we do to animals for our gustatory pleasure, we play a game of pretend, like the child who covers her eyes and thinks you can't see her. And yet, there she remains. Closing our eyes doesn't make violence disappear; it only closes our minds and hearts and enables the violence to continue"
CESAR CHAVEZ (US Labour Leader & Civil Rights Activist) "We know we cannot be kind to animals until we stop exploiting them - exploiting animals in the name of science, exploiting animals in the name of sport, exploiting animals in the name of fashion, and yes, exploiting animals in the name of food"
GARY L FRANCIONE (US Legal Scholar, Distinguished Professor of Law) "Being Vegan is not just a matter of being 'kind' to animals. First and foremost, it is a matter of being just and observing our moral obligation to not treat other sentient beings as things"
AND "Veganism is an act of nonviolent defiance. It is our statement that we reject the notion that animals are things and that we regard sentient non-humans as moral persons with the fundamental moral right not to be treated as the property or resources of humans"
" Being Vegan is easy. Are there social pressures that encourage you to continue to eat, wear, and use animal products? Of course there are. But in a patriarchal, racist, homophobic, and ableist society, there are social pressures to participate and engage in sexism, racism, homophobia and ableism. At some point , you have to decide who you are and what matters morally to you. And once you decide that you regard victimising vulnerable non-humans is not morally acceptable. it is easy to go and stay Vegan.
