Jaap Korteweg is a 9th generation farmer and founder of 'The Vegetarian Butcher' , a faux meat manufacturer (mostly but not all vegan) from The Netherlands. How did this happen? Well being in the livestock industry Jaap saw at first hand the disasters that were BSE (mad cow disease) and the consequent cull. Seeing the death and suffering involved he knew he must make a change both personally and professionally and so looked at moving towards 'organic' cattle farming. This didn't work either because he now couldn't work with the reality of his cattle leaving for the slaughterhouse. He needed to change direction entirely and so he created The Vegetarian Butcher. Working with concept designer Niko Koffeman, chef Paul Bom and their team Jaap realised his ambition of creating 'vegetarian meat' that will show meat eaters that they can leave meat behind.


To prove to everyone that they were getting things right The Vegetarian Butcher opened a restaurant called 'De Vleesch Lobby' or 'The Meat Lobby' - but without actual meat! This worked so well that they've left this idea behind and moved into supplying other outlets and incorporating their faux meats into general menus across Holland. Now their products have arrived in the UK and are available in supermarkets such as Tesco. Enjoy! (Remember to check labels as ALL are Vegetarian but NOT ALL are VEGAN!!!).
